Q27: Rate of increase of A=13tA = \frac13\sqrt t decreases with age

The question

According to a psychologist, the ability of a person to understand spatial concepts is given by

A=13t,A = \frac13\sqrt t,

where tt is the age in years, t∈[5,18]t \in [5, 18]. Show that the rate of increase of the ability to understand spatial concepts decreases with age in between 5 and 18.

Exam answer
A=13tA = \frac13\sqrt t ∴ dAdt=16t−12=16t\therefore\ \frac{dA}{dt} = \frac16t^{-\frac12} = \frac{1}{6\sqrt t}
Why?

Write t=t12\sqrt t = t^{\frac12} and use the power rule:

ddt(tn)=ntn−1\frac{d}{dt}(t^n) = nt^{n - 1} 13×12=16,12−1=−12\frac13 \times \frac12 = \frac16,\quad \frac12 - 1 = -\frac12 dAdt=13⋅ddt(t12)=13⋅12 t12−1=16 t−12\begin{aligned} \frac{dA}{dt} &= \frac13 \cdot \frac{d}{dt}\big(t^{\frac12}\big) \\ &= \frac13 \cdot \frac12\,t^{\frac12 - 1} \\ &= \frac16\,t^{-\frac12} \end{aligned}

A negative power means a reciprocal: t−12=1tt^{-\frac12} = \frac{1}{\sqrt t}.

for all t∈[5,18]t \in [5, 18].

Why?

dAdt\frac{dA}{dt} is the rate of increase of the ability. It is positive, so the ability itself grows with age.

The question is about how this rate changes. So we differentiate dAdt\frac{dA}{dt} once more and look at the sign.

d2Adt2=16(−12)t−32\frac{d^2A}{dt^2} = \frac16\left(-\frac12\right)t^{-\frac32}
Why?

Power rule again on 16t−12\frac16t^{-\frac12}: bring down the power −12-\frac12, and lower the power by 1:

−12−1=−32-\frac12 - 1 = -\frac32
∴ d2Adt2=−112tt\therefore\ \frac{d^2A}{dt^2} = -\frac{1}{12t\sqrt t}
Why?

16×(−12)=−112\frac16 \times \left(-\frac12\right) = -\frac{1}{12}, and

t32=t1⋅t12=ttt^{\frac32} = t^1 \cdot t^{\frac12} = t\sqrt t

Put these together:

16(−12)=−1×16×2=−112t−32=1t32=1tt−112⋅1tt=−112tt\begin{aligned} \frac16\left(-\frac12\right) &= -\frac{1 \times 1}{6 \times 2} = -\frac{1}{12} \\[4pt] t^{-\frac32} &= \frac{1}{t^{\frac32}} = \frac{1}{t\sqrt t} \\[4pt] -\frac{1}{12} \cdot \frac{1}{t\sqrt t} &= -\frac{1}{12t\sqrt t} \end{aligned}

So, d2Adt2<0\dfrac{d^2A}{dt^2} < 0 for all t∈[5,18]t \in [5, 18].

Why?

For tt in [5,18][5, 18], t>0t > 0, so 12tt>012t\sqrt t > 0. With the minus sign in front, the second derivative is negative.

Hence dAdt\dfrac{dA}{dt}, the rate of increase of AA, is a decreasing function of tt in [5,18][5, 18].

Why?

A function whose derivative is negative on an interval is decreasing there. Here the function is dAdt\frac{dA}{dt}, and its derivative is d2Adt2\frac{d^2A}{dt^2}.

Watch out: AA itself still increases. It is the rate of increase that gets smaller.

This means that the rate of increase of the ability to understand spatial concepts decreases (slows down) with age in between 5 and 18. Hence proved.

Where this comes from

Question type: Show that a function is increasing everywhere

How to spot it: click to see

Type 4. Show that a function is increasing everywhere

Spot it: "Show that (or prove that) ff is increasing on R\R."

Here: The function to test is the rate dAdt=16t\frac{dA}{dt} = \frac{1}{6\sqrt t} itself. Its derivative d2Adt2=−112tt\frac{d^2A}{dt^2} = -\frac{1}{12t\sqrt t} is negative for every tt in [5,18][5, 18], so the rate decreases.
