Q18: Area bounded by and the line
A student observes an open-air Honeybee nest on the branch of a tree, whose plane figure is parabolic shape given by . Then the area (in sq units) of the region bounded by parabola and the line is
(A)
(B)
(C)
(D)
Putting in : , so . The line meets the parabola at and .
The region is symmetric about the -axis. For , , .
Why?
is an upward parabola with vertex at the origin. Replacing by leaves the equation unchanged, so the two halves are mirror images in the -axis.
For the right half take the positive root: . The region runs from the vertex, , up to the line .
Why?
With horizontal strips, the area of the right half is ; the factor 2 doubles it for the left half. Then the power rule:
So , and .
Watch out: forgetting the factor 2 for the left half gives , option (A).
Answer: (B) sq units
Chapter 8, Application of Integrals: Area between a parabola and a line.
Question type: A region against the -axis
How to spot it: click to see
Type 2. A region against the -axis: horizontal strips
Spot it: the region is bounded by the -axis, or the limits are values, like the line .
Here: The line is , a limit. Write the parabola as , integrate from to 4, and double for the left half: .
