OR
(iii) (b) Use Second Derivative Test to find the length 2x and width 2y of the soccer field (in terms of a and b) that maximize its area. (2 marks)
Exam answer
(i) Let (x,y) be the upper right vertex of the rectangle, with x,y>0. It lies on the ellipse, so y=aba2−x2.
Why?
Solve the equation of the ellipse for y:
b2y2y2=1−a2x2=a2a2−x2=a2b2(a2−x2)
The vertex is above the x-axis, so take the positive square root.
y=a2b2a2−x2=aba2−x2
The rectangle of length 2x and breadth 2y inside the ellipse, with its vertex (x,y) on the ellipse.
The area function is
A=2x×2aba2−x2=a4bxa2−x2,x∈(0,a)Why?
Area of a rectangle = length × breadth =2x×2y. Then put in y from above.
Here a2−x2=a2−x2a2−x2: multiply its top and bottom by a2−x2, and a2−x2×a2−x2=a2−x2.
Factor it as a difference of squares:
a2−2x2=−2(x2−2a2)=−2(x+2a)(x−2a)
This uses 2a2=(2a)2 and p2−q2=(p+q)(p−q).
dxdA=0⇒x=2a(x>0)Why?
A fraction is zero only when its numerator is zero. The denominator is not zero for 0<x<a. The other root x=−2a is rejected because x>0.
a2−2x2a2x2x=0=2x2=2a2=±2a
∴x=2a is the critical point.
(iii) (a) For values of x less than 2a and close to 2a,dxdA>0, and for values of x greater than 2a and close to 2a,dxdA<0.
Why?
In dxdA the factors a4b and a2−x2 are positive, so the sign is the sign of a2−2x2.
For x a little less than 2a,2x2<a2, so it is positive. For x a little more, 2x2>a2, so it is negative.
First derivative test: if f′ changes sign from + to − at c, then c is a point of local maximum.
Hence, by the first derivative test, there is a local maximum at the critical point x=2a. Since there is only one critical point, the area of the soccer field is maximum at x=2a.
y=aba2−2a2=2bWhy?
Put x2=2a2 in y. Then a2−2a2=2a2, whose square root is 2a, and ab×2a=2b.
With x2=2a2,6x2=6×2a2=3a2. Then a2−3a2=−2a2, and
a232b2×(−2a2)=−64b2
Second derivative test: Z′=0 and Z′′<0 give a local maximum.
Hence, by the second derivative test, there is a local maximum value of Z at the critical point x=2a. Since there is only one critical point, Z is maximum at x=2a; hence, A is maximum at x=2a, where y=2b.
∴ For maximum area, the length of the soccer field should be 2x=a2 and its width should be 2y=b2.
Where this comes from
Chapter 6, Application of Derivatives: Maximum area: rectangle inscribed in an ellipse.
Type 10. Word problems: the biggest box, the least cost
Spot it: a real object and the words "maximum", "minimum", "largest" or "least".
Here: With the corner (x,y) on the ellipse, the area in x alone is A=a4bxa2−x2 for x in (0,a). Its only critical point is x=2a: (iii)(a) checks the sign of A′ around it, (iii)(b) uses Z=A2 for the second derivative.
