Exercise 7.2 · Q34: ∫tan⁡xsin⁡xcos⁡x dx\int\frac{\sqrt{\tan x}}{\sin x\cos x}\,dx

Exercise 7.2Integration by substitution · Section 7.3.1
The question

Integrate the function (Exercise 7.2, "Integrate the functions in Exercises 1 to 37"):

tan⁡xsin⁡xcos⁡x\frac{\sqrt{\tan x}}{\sin x\cos x}
Exam answer

Let I=∫tan⁡xsin⁡xcos⁡x dxI = \displaystyle\int\frac{\sqrt{\tan x}}{\sin x\cos x}\,dx.

Dividing the numerator and the denominator by cos⁡2x\cos^2 x,

I=∫tan⁡x sec⁡2xtan⁡x dx=∫sec⁡2xtan⁡x dx\begin{aligned} I &= \int\frac{\sqrt{\tan x}\,\sec^2 x}{\tan x}\,dx \\ &= \int\frac{\sec^2 x}{\sqrt{\tan x}}\,dx \end{aligned}

Put tan⁡x=t\tan x = t. Then sec⁡2x dx=dt\sec^2 x\,dx = dt.

I=∫t−1/2 dt=t1/21/2+C=2t+C\begin{aligned} I &= \int t^{-1/2}\,dt = \frac{t^{1/2}}{1/2} + C \\ &= 2\sqrt t + C \end{aligned}

∴ I=2tan⁡x+C\therefore\ I = 2\sqrt{\tan x} + C.

Want the reason behind every step, the basics and the checks?

The one idea this problem is built on

The denominator can be rewritten in terms of tan⁡x\tan x: sin⁡xcos⁡x=tan⁡x⋅cos⁡2x\sin x\cos x = \tan x\cdot\cos^2 x. Then

tan⁡xsin⁡xcos⁡x=tan⁡xtan⁡x⋅sec⁡2x=sec⁡2xtan⁡x.\begin{aligned} \frac{\sqrt{\tan x}}{\sin x\cos x} &= \frac{\sqrt{\tan x}}{\tan x}\cdot\sec^2 x \\ &= \frac{\sec^2 x}{\sqrt{\tan x}}. \end{aligned}

Now sec⁡2x\sec^2 x is the derivative of tan⁡x\tan x, so t=tan⁡xt = \tan x turns the integral into ∫t−1/2 dt\int t^{-1/2}\,dt.

Given, to find, and the plan
Given
f(x)=tan⁡xsin⁡xcos⁡xf(x) = \dfrac{\sqrt{\tan x}}{\sin x\cos x}.
To find
∫f(x) dx\int f(x)\,dx, and where the answer is valid.
Plan
(1) Find where ff is defined (it forces tan⁡x>0\tan x > 0). (2) Rewrite ff as sec⁡2xtan⁡x\frac{\sec^2 x}{\sqrt{\tan x}}. (3) Substitute t=tan⁡xt = \tan x. (4) Integrate the power and return to xx. (5) Differentiate back.

Basics you need

1tan⁡x\tan x, sec⁡x\sec x in terms of sin⁡,cos⁡\sin, \cos

tan⁡x=sin⁡xcos⁡x\tan x = \frac{\sin x}{\cos x} and sec⁡2x=1cos⁡2x\sec^2 x = \frac{1}{\cos^2 x}, so tan⁡xcos⁡2x=sin⁡xcos⁡x\tan x\cos^2 x = \sin x\cos x. Basics: trigonometric identities

2ddxtan⁡x=sec⁡2x\frac{d}{dx}\tan x = \sec^2 x

Standard formula (iv), Section 7.2. Basics: integration undoes differentiation

3Substitution

If t=g(x)t = g(x), then dt=g′(x) dxdt = g'(x)\,dx. Basics: substitution (the chain rule backwards)

4Powers

For t>0t > 0: tt=t−1/2\frac{\sqrt t}{t} = t^{-1/2}, and ∫t−1/2 dt=2t+C\int t^{-1/2}\,dt = 2\sqrt t + C. Basics: powers and the power rule

Solution

  1. Where is the integrand defined?

    • tan⁡x\sqrt{\tan x} needs tan⁡x\tan x defined and tan⁡x≥0\tan x \ge 0.
    • The denominator needs sin⁡xcos⁡x≠0\sin x\cos x \ne 0, so sin⁡x≠0\sin x \ne 0 and cos⁡x≠0\cos x \ne 0; then tan⁡x≠0\tan x \ne 0.

    Together: tan⁡x>0\tan x > 0, that is,

    nπ<x<nπ+π2,n an integer.n\pi < x < n\pi + \tfrac{\pi}{2}, \quad n \text{ an integer}.

    On these intervals sin⁡x\sin x and cos⁡x\cos x have the same sign, so sin⁡xcos⁡x>0\sin x\cos x > 0 as well.

    The integrand only exists on these intervals, so the answer is claimed only there (Note, Section 7.2). Knowing tan⁡x>0\tan x > 0 also lets us simplify tan⁡xtan⁡x=1tan⁡x\frac{\sqrt{\tan x}}{\tan x} = \frac{1}{\sqrt{\tan x}} in Step 2.
    tan⁡x>0\tan x > 0 in the first and third quadrants. Basics: trigonometric facts
  2. Rewrite the denominator using tan⁡x\tan x

    Since tan⁡xcos⁡2x=sin⁡xcos⁡xcos⁡2x=sin⁡xcos⁡x\tan x\cos^2 x = \frac{\sin x}{\cos x}\cos^2 x = \sin x\cos x,

    tan⁡xsin⁡xcos⁡x=tan⁡xtan⁡x cos⁡2x=tan⁡xtan⁡x⋅sec⁡2x=sec⁡2xtan⁡x.\begin{aligned} \frac{\sqrt{\tan x}}{\sin x\cos x} &= \frac{\sqrt{\tan x}}{\tan x\,\cos^2 x} \\ &= \frac{\sqrt{\tan x}}{\tan x}\cdot\sec^2 x = \frac{\sec^2 x}{\sqrt{\tan x}}. \end{aligned}
    We want the integrand as "a function of tan⁡x\tan x" times "the derivative of tan⁡x\tan x". The derivative of tan⁡x\tan x is sec⁡2x=1cos⁡2x\sec^2 x = \frac{1}{\cos^2 x}, so we pull a factor cos⁡2x\cos^2 x out of the denominator. The last equality uses uu=1u\frac{\sqrt u}{u} = \frac{1}{\sqrt u}, valid since u=tan⁡x>0u = \tan x > 0.
    1cos⁡2x=sec⁡2x\frac{1}{\cos^2 x} = \sec^2 x. Basics: trigonometric identities
  3. Substitute t=tan⁡xt = \tan x

    Put t=tan⁡xt = \tan x, so dt=sec⁡2x dxdt = \sec^2 x\,dx. On the domain, t>0t > 0. Then

    ∫sec⁡2xtan⁡x dx=∫dtt=∫t−1/2 dt.\int\frac{\sec^2 x}{\sqrt{\tan x}}\,dx = \int\frac{dt}{\sqrt t} = \int t^{-1/2}\,dt.
    After Step 2, the integrand is exactly "a function of tan⁡x\tan x" times sec⁡2x\sec^2 x, the pattern substitution handles (Section 7.3.1).
    Standard formula (iv), Section 7.2: ddxtan⁡x=sec⁡2x\frac{d}{dx}\tan x = \sec^2 x. Lesson: integration by substitution
  4. Integrate and return to xx

    Power rule with n=−12n = -\frac12, n+1=12n + 1 = \frac12:

    ∫t−1/2 dt=t1/21/2+C=2t+C=2tan⁡x+C.\begin{aligned} \int t^{-1/2}\,dt &= \frac{t^{1/2}}{1/2} + C = 2\sqrt t + C \\ &= 2\sqrt{\tan x} + C. \end{aligned}
    n=−12≠−1n = -\frac12 \ne -1, so the power rule applies; dividing by 12\frac12 doubles.
    Standard formula (i), Section 7.2. Basics: power rule
  5. Check: differentiate the answer back

    Let F(x)=2(tan⁡x)1/2F(x) = 2(\tan x)^{1/2}. Chain rule, outer 2u1/22u^{1/2}, inner u=tan⁡xu = \tan x:

    F′(x)=2⋅12(tan⁡x)−1/2sec⁡2x=sec⁡2xtan⁡x=tan⁡xtan⁡x⋅sec⁡2xtan⁡x=tan⁡xsin⁡xcos⁡x.\begin{aligned} F'(x) &= 2\cdot\tfrac12(\tan x)^{-1/2}\sec^2 x \\ &= \frac{\sec^2 x}{\sqrt{\tan x}} = \frac{\tan x}{\sqrt{\tan x}}\cdot\frac{\sec^2 x}{\tan x} \\ &= \frac{\sqrt{\tan x}}{\sin x\cos x}. \end{aligned}

    This is the integrand. ✓ (The last step uses tan⁡xtan⁡x=tan⁡x\frac{\tan x}{\sqrt{\tan x}} = \sqrt{\tan x} and tan⁡xcos⁡2x=sin⁡xcos⁡x\tan x\cos^2 x = \sin x\cos x.)

    Differentiating back confirms the antiderivative (Property (I), Section 7.2.1) and reverses the rewriting of Step 2.
    Chain rule, Theorem 4, Section 5.3.1. Basics: integration undoes differentiation
Result

∫tan⁡xsin⁡xcos⁡x dx=2tan⁡x+C,\int\frac{\sqrt{\tan x}}{\sin x\cos x}\,dx = 2\sqrt{\tan x} + C, valid where tan⁡x>0\tan x > 0, that is, nπ<x<nπ+π2n\pi < x < n\pi + \frac{\pi}{2}. (Textbook answer: 2tan⁡x+C2\sqrt{\tan x} + C.)

Check it with numbers

Take x=1x = 1 and h=0.001h = 0.001:

  • F(1.001)=2.4986705F(1.001) = 2.4986705 and F(0.999)=2.4931807F(0.999) = 2.4931807,
  • slope ≈2.4986705−2.49318070.002=2.7449\approx \frac{2.4986705 - 2.4931807}{0.002} = 2.7449,
  • integrand: tan⁡1sin⁡1cos⁡1\frac{\sqrt{\tan 1}}{\sin 1\cos 1} =1.2479610.454649= \frac{1.247961}{0.454649} =2.7449= 2.7449. ✓
Common mistakes
  1. Substituting t=tan⁡xt = \tan x without rewriting first. Then sin⁡xcos⁡x\sin x\cos x is left in xx. Rewrite the denominator as tan⁡xcos⁡2x\tan x\cos^2 x before substituting.
  2. Writing tt=t\frac{\sqrt t}{t} = \sqrt t. It is t1/2−1=t−1/2t^{1/2 - 1} = t^{-1/2}.
  3. Ignoring the domain. The integrand exists only where tan⁡x>0\tan x > 0.
What to take away
  1. sin⁡xcos⁡x=tan⁡xcos⁡2x\sin x\cos x = \tan x\cos^2 x: dividing by cos⁡2x\cos^2 x produces sec⁡2x\sec^2 x, the derivative of tan⁡x\tan x.
  2. If the integrand can be written as h(tan⁡x)sec⁡2xh(\tan x)\sec^2 x, use t=tan⁡xt = \tan x.
  3. ∫g′(x)g(x) dx=2g(x)+C\int\frac{g'(x)}{\sqrt{g(x)}}\,dx = 2\sqrt{g(x)} + C where g(x)>0g(x) > 0.
