Q8: f′(1)f'(1) for f(x)=xtan⁡−1xf(x) = x\tan^{-1}x

The question

If f(x)=xtan⁡−1xf(x) = x\tan^{-1}x, then f′(1)f'(1) is equal to

(A) π4−12\frac{\pi}{4} - \frac{1}{2}

(B) π4+12\frac{\pi}{4} + \frac{1}{2}

(C) −π4−12-\frac{\pi}{4} - \frac{1}{2}

(D) −π4+12-\frac{\pi}{4} + \frac{1}{2}

Exam answer

f(x)=xtan⁡−1xf(x) = x\tan^{-1}x. By the product rule,

f′(x)=1⋅tan⁡−1x+x⋅11+x2\begin{aligned} f'(x) &= 1 \cdot \tan^{-1}x + x \cdot \frac{1}{1 + x^2} \end{aligned}
Why?

The product rule:

ddx(uv)=dudx v+u dvdx\frac{d}{dx}(uv) = \frac{du}{dx}\,v + u\,\frac{dv}{dx}

Here u=xu = x, so dudx=1\frac{du}{dx} = 1, and v=tan⁡−1xv = \tan^{-1}x, so dvdx=11+x2\frac{dv}{dx} = \frac{1}{1 + x^2} (a standard derivative).

f′(1)=tan⁡−11+11+1=π4+12\begin{aligned} f'(1) &= \tan^{-1}1 + \frac{1}{1 + 1} \\ &= \frac{\pi}{4} + \frac{1}{2} \end{aligned}
Why?

Put x=1x = 1. The second term is 11+12=12\frac{1}{1 + 1^2} = \frac{1}{2}.

tan⁡−11=π4\tan^{-1}1 = \frac{\pi}{4}, since tan⁡π4=1\tan\frac{\pi}{4} = 1 and π4\frac{\pi}{4} lies in the principal range (−π2,π2)\left(-\frac{\pi}{2}, \frac{\pi}{2}\right).

Both terms are positive, so the options with a minus sign, (A), (C) and (D), are ruled out.

Answer: (B) π4+12\dfrac{\pi}{4} + \dfrac{1}{2}
