Q14: General solution of ey′=xe^{y'} = x

The question

What is the general solution of the differential equation ey′=xe^{y'} = x?

(A) y=xlog⁡x+cy = x\log x + c

(B) y=xlog⁡x−x+cy = x\log x - x + c

(C) y=xlog⁡x+x+cy = x\log x + x + c

(D) y=x+cy = x + c

Exam answer

Taking log on both sides (x>0x > 0),

ey′=x⇒dydx=log⁡xe^{y'} = x \Rightarrow \frac{dy}{dx} = \log x
Why?

log⁡\log (to base ee) undoes ee to a power: log⁡eu=u\log e^u = u. With u=y′u = y' this gives y′=log⁡xy' = \log x, and y′y' means dydx\frac{dy}{dx}.

Separating the variables and integrating,

dy=log⁡x dx⇒ ∫dy=∫log⁡x dx\begin{aligned} &dy = \log x\,dx \\ \Rightarrow\ &\int dy = \int\log x\,dx \end{aligned} y=∫log⁡x⋅1 dxy = \int\log x \cdot 1\,dx

Integrating by parts, with log⁡x\log x as the first function and 1 as the second function,

Why?

We cannot integrate log⁡x\log x directly, but we can differentiate it. So write it as log⁡x⋅1\log x \cdot 1 and use integration by parts:

∫u v dx=u∫v dx−∫(dudx∫v dx)dx\begin{aligned} \int u\,v\,dx &= u\int v\,dx \\ &\quad - \int\left(\frac{du}{dx}\int v\,dx\right)dx \end{aligned}

Here u=log⁡xu = \log x, so dudx=1x\frac{du}{dx} = \frac{1}{x}, and v=1v = 1, so ∫v dx=x\int v\,dx = x.

y=xlog⁡x−∫x⋅1x dx=xlog⁡x−∫1 dx=xlog⁡x−x+c\begin{aligned} y &= x\log x - \int x \cdot \frac{1}{x}\,dx \\ &= x\log x - \int 1\,dx \\ &= x\log x - x + c \end{aligned}
Why?

x⋅1x=1x \cdot \frac{1}{x} = 1 and ∫1 dx=x\int 1\,dx = x. One constant cc at the end is enough.

Check by differentiating:

For xlog⁡xx\log x use the product rule with u=xu = x, v=log⁡xv = \log x, u′=1u' = 1, v′=1xv' = \frac1x:

ddx(xlog⁡x)=u′v+uv′=(1)log⁡x+x⋅1x=log⁡x+1\begin{aligned} \frac{d}{dx}(x\log x) &= u'v + uv' \\ &= (1)\log x + x \cdot \frac1x \\ &= \log x + 1 \end{aligned} ddx(xlog⁡x−x)=log⁡x+1−1=log⁡x\begin{aligned} &\frac{d}{dx}(x\log x - x) \\ &= \log x + 1 - 1 = \log x \end{aligned}

Watch out: option (A) drops the −x-x that comes from ∫1 dx\int 1\,dx.

Answer: (B) y=xlog⁡x−x+cy = x\log x - x + c

Where this comes from

Chapter 9, Differential Equations: Differential equations: variables separable.

Question type: Variables separable + Integration by parts (combines 2 types)

How to spot it: click to see

Ch 9, type 3. Variables separable: yy on one side, xx on the other

Spot it: dydx\frac{dy}{dx} equals a part in xx times a part in yy, like (1+x2)(1+y2)(1 + x^2)(1 + y^2).

Here: Take log of both sides: dydx=log⁡x\frac{dy}{dx} = \log x, with no yy on the right. So dy=log⁡x dxdy = \log x\,dx, and integrate both sides.

Ch 7, type 8. Integration by parts: a product of two different kinds

Spot it: a product such as xsin⁡xx\sin x, xexxe^x or xlog⁡xx\log x. A lone log⁡x\log x or tan⁡−1x\tan^{-1}x works too: take the other function as 1.

Here: ∫log⁡x dx\int\log x\,dx has no card: write it as ∫log⁡x⋅1 dx\int\log x\cdot 1\,dx and integrate by parts, with log⁡x\log x first, to get xlog⁡x−xx\log x - x.
