Q3: kk when the triangle (−3,0)(-3, 0), (3,0)(3, 0), (0,k)(0, k) has area 9

Sample 2023-24Ch 4 · Determinants
The question

If the area of the triangle with vertices (−3,0)(-3, 0), (3,0)(3, 0) and (0,k)(0, k) is 9 sq units, then the value/s of kk will be

(a) 99

(b) ±3\pm 3

(c) −9-9

(d) 66

Exam answer
Δ=12∣−3013010k1∣\Delta = \frac{1}{2}\begin{vmatrix} -3 & 0 & 1 \\ 3 & 0 & 1 \\ 0 & k & 1 \end{vmatrix}
Why?

The area of the triangle with vertices (x1,y1)(x_1, y_1), (x2,y2)(x_2, y_2), (x3,y3)(x_3, y_3) is the absolute value of

Δ=12∣x1y11x2y21x3y31∣\Delta = \frac{1}{2}\begin{vmatrix} x_1 & y_1 & 1 \\ x_2 & y_2 & 1 \\ x_3 & y_3 & 1 \end{vmatrix}

Each row holds one vertex, with a 1 in the last column.

Expanding along C2C_2:

Δ=12(−k)∣−3131∣=12(−k)(−3−3)=3k\begin{aligned} \Delta &= \frac{1}{2}(-k)\begin{vmatrix} -3 & 1 \\ 3 & 1 \end{vmatrix} \\ &= \frac{1}{2}(-k)(-3 - 3) = 3k \end{aligned}
Why?

Column 2 has two zeros, so only the entry kk contributes.

kk is in row 3, column 2, so its sign is (−1)3+2=−1(-1)^{3 + 2} = -1. Its minor comes from deleting row 3 and column 2:

∣−3131∣=(−3)(1)−(1)(3)=−3−3=−6\begin{aligned} &\begin{vmatrix} -3 & 1 \\ 3 & 1 \end{vmatrix} \\ &= (-3)(1) - (1)(3) \\ &= -3 - 3 = -6 \end{aligned}

Now multiply the three parts:

Δ=12(−k)(−6)=12(6k)((−k)(−6)=6k)=3k\begin{aligned} \Delta &= \frac{1}{2}(-k)(-6) \\ &= \frac{1}{2}(6k) \quad ((-k)(-6) = 6k) \\ &= 3k \end{aligned}

Area =9= 9, so 3k=±93k = \pm 9, that is k=±3k = \pm 3.

Why?

Watch out: Δ\Delta can come out negative, and the area is its absolute value. So both 3k=93k = 9 and 3k=−93k = -9 are possible.

3k=9⇒k=93=33k=−9⇒k=−93=−3\begin{aligned} 3k = 9 &\Rightarrow k = \frac{9}{3} = 3 \\ 3k = -9 &\Rightarrow k = \frac{-9}{3} = -3 \end{aligned}

Check: the base from (−3,0)(-3, 0) to (3,0)(3, 0) is 6, and the height is ∣k∣=3\lvert k\rvert = 3. Area =12⋅6⋅3=9= \frac{1}{2} \cdot 6 \cdot 3 = 9.

Answer: (b) ±3\pm 3

Where this comes from

Chapter 4, Determinants: Area of a triangle using determinants.

Question type: Area given, or points on one line

How to spot it: click to see

Type 4. Area given, or points on one line: use ±\pm or 0

Spot it: the area is given and a vertex has a kk in it; or "collinear"; or "find the equation of the line using determinants".

Here: The area 9 is given and the vertex (0,k)(0, k) has the unknown: expand along C2C_2 to get Δ=3k\Delta = 3k, then 3k=±93k = \pm 9 gives k=±3k = \pm 3.
