The question
The value of m for which the points with position vectors −i^−j^+2k^, 2i^+mj^+5k^ and 3i^+11j^+6k^ are collinear, is
(A) 8
(B) −8
(C) 2
(D) 25
Exam answer
Let the points be A, B and C.
ABAC=3i^+(m+1)j^+3k^=4i^+12j^+4k^
Why?
The vector from one point to another is the position vector of the end minus that of the start:
AB=b−a
For AB: 2−(−1)=3, m−(−1)=m+1, 5−2=3.
For AC: 3−(−1)=4, 11−(−1)=12, 6−2=4.
For collinear points, AB∥AC, so the ratios 43, 12m+1, 43 are equal:
Why?
AB and AC both start at A. If they are parallel, A, B and C lie on one line. Parallel vectors have proportional components:
b1a1=b2a2=b3a3
The first and last ratios are already 43, so the middle one must be 43 too.
12m+1=43⇒m+1=9
Why?
Cross-multiplying, 4(m+1)=3×12=36, so m+1=9.
12m+14(m+1)4(m+1)m+1=43=3×12=36=436=9
∴ m=8
Why?
Take 1 from both sides: m=9−1=8.
Check: AB=3i^+9j^+3k^=43AC.
Why?
With m=8, the middle part of AB is 8+1=9. Multiply each part of AC by 43:
43(4)43(12)43(4)=3=9=3
Answer: (A) 8

Question type: Collinear points
How to spot it: click to see
Type 3. Collinear points: two pieces in the same direction
Spot it: "Show that the points are collinear", that is, they lie on one straight line.
Here: Call the points A, B, C and find AB=3i^+(m+1)j^+3k^ and AC=4i^+12j^+4k^. Their parts must be in proportion, so 12m+1=43.
