The question

Integrate the functions in Exercises 1 to 23.

8. e5log⁡x−e4log⁡xe3log⁡x−e2log⁡x\dfrac{e^{5\log x} - e^{4\log x}}{e^{3\log x} - e^{2\log x}}

Exam answer

Let II be the given integral. For x>0x > 0, enlog⁡x=elog⁡xn=xne^{n\log x} = e^{\log x^n} = x^n. So

I=∫x5−x4x3−x2 dx=∫x4(x−1)x2(x−1) dx=∫x2 dx\begin{aligned} I &= \int\frac{x^5 - x^4}{x^3 - x^2}\,dx \\ &= \int\frac{x^4(x - 1)}{x^2(x - 1)}\,dx \\ &= \int x^2\,dx \end{aligned}

∴ I=x33+C\therefore\ I = \dfrac{x^3}{3} + C.

The one idea this problem is built on

The exponential and the logarithm undo each other: elog⁡y=ye^{\log y} = y for y>0y > 0. So eklog⁡x=elog⁡xk=xke^{k\log x} = e^{\log x^k} = x^k, and the frightening fraction is really x5−x4x3−x2\frac{x^5 - x^4}{x^3 - x^2}, which simplifies to x2x^2. The method here is "simplify before integrating"; after that only the power rule is needed.

Given, to find, and the plan
Given
f(x)=e5log⁡x−e4log⁡xe3log⁡x−e2log⁡xf(x) = \dfrac{e^{5\log x} - e^{4\log x}}{e^{3\log x} - e^{2\log x}}. log⁡x\log x needs x>0x > 0; Step 2 shows the denominator also excludes x=1x = 1.
To find
∫f(x) dx\displaystyle\int f(x)\,dx.
Plan
(1) Turn each exponential into a power of xx. (2) Factorise and cancel, noting the domain. (3) Integrate. (4) Differentiate back.

Basics you need

1elog⁡y=ye^{\log y} = y and klog⁡x=log⁡xkk\log x = \log x^k

For x>0x > 0: eklog⁡x=elog⁡xk=xke^{k\log x} = e^{\log x^k} = x^k. Here log⁡\log is the natural logarithm, the inverse of exe^x. Basics: logarithms

2Power rule

∫x2 dx=x33+C\int x^2\,dx = \frac{x^3}{3} + C (standard formula (i)). Basics: the power rule

Solution

  1. Turn each exponential into a power of xx

    For x>0x > 0 and each kk: eklog⁡x=elog⁡xk=xke^{k\log x} = e^{\log x^k} = x^k. So

    f(x)=x5−x4x3−x2.f(x) = \frac{x^5 - x^4}{x^3 - x^2}.
No method of integration applies well to the given form, but the form hides simple powers. Simplifying first is always worth trying before reaching for substitution or parts. The step needs x>0x > 0, which is required anyway for log⁡x\log x to exist.
    klog⁡x=log⁡xkk\log x = \log x^k and elog⁡y=ye^{\log y} = y (Basic 1). Basics: logarithms
  2. Factorise, cancel, and record the domain

    f(x)=x4(x−1)x2(x−1)=x2f(x) = \frac{x^4(x - 1)}{x^2(x - 1)} = x^2

    for x>0x > 0, x≠1x \ne 1.

The denominator x2(x−1)x^2(x - 1) is 0 at x=1x = 1 (and at x=0x = 0, already excluded), so the original function is not defined there. For every other x>0x > 0 the common factors x2x^2 and x−1x - 1 are non-zero and may be cancelled.
Cancelling a common factor is allowed only where it is not zero.
  3. Integrate with the power rule

    ∫f(x) dx=∫x2 dx=x33+C.\int f(x)\,dx = \int x^2\,dx = \frac{x^3}{3} + C.
Standard formula (i) with n=2n = 2. The formula holds on each of the intervals 0<x<10 < x < 1 and x>1x > 1, and the constant may differ between them. This is the textbook's answer.
Standard formula (i), Section 7.2. Basics: the power rule
  4. Check: differentiate the answer

ddx(x33)=x2\dfrac{d}{dx}\Big(\dfrac{x^3}{3}\Big) = x^2, which equals f(x)f(x) at every point of its domain by Step 2. ✓

    Directly: at x=2x = 2, e5log⁡2=25=32e^{5\log 2} = 2^5 = 32, and so on, giving 32−168−4=4=22\frac{32 - 16}{8 - 4} = 4 = 2^2.
Result

For x>0x > 0, x≠1x \ne 1:

∫e5log⁡x−e4log⁡xe3log⁡x−e2log⁡x dx=x33+C.\int\frac{e^{5\log x} - e^{4\log x}}{e^{3\log x} - e^{2\log x}}\,dx = \frac{x^3}{3} + C.

(Textbook answer: x33+C\frac{x^3}{3} + C, the same.)

Check it with numbers

At x=3x = 3: 243−8127−9=16218=9=32\frac{243 - 81}{27 - 9} = \frac{162}{18} = 9 = 3^2. ✓

Area check on [2,3][2, 3]: 273−83=193≈6.3333333\frac{27}{3} - \frac83 = \frac{19}{3} \approx 6.3333333. Numerical integration of the original fraction from 2 to 3 also gives 6.33333336.3333333.

Common mistakes
  1. Reading e5log⁡xe^{5\log x} as 5x5x. The 5 multiplies the logarithm, so it becomes the power: x5x^5.
  2. Forgetting the domain. log⁡x\log x needs x>0x > 0, and x=1x = 1 makes the denominator 0, even though x2x^2 itself is defined there.
What to take away
  1. eklog⁡x=xke^{k\log x} = x^k for x>0x > 0: exponentials of logarithms are just powers.
  2. Always simplify the integrand first; cancelled factors still restrict the domain.
