Exercise 10.4Area of a parallelogram by the vector product · Section 10.6.3
The question

Find the area of the parallelogram whose adjacent sides are determined by the vectors a⃗=i^−j^+3k^\vec a = \hat i - \hat j + 3\hat k and b⃗=2i^−7j^+k^\vec b = 2\hat i - 7\hat j + \hat k.

Exam answer

The area of the parallelogram with adjacent sides a⃗\vec a and b⃗\vec b is ∣a⃗×b⃗∣|\vec a\times\vec b|.

a⃗×b⃗=∣i^j^k^1−132−71∣=i^(−1+21)−j^(1−6)+k^(−7+2)=20i^+5j^−5k^\begin{aligned} \vec a\times\vec b &= \begin{vmatrix} \hat i & \hat j & \hat k \\ 1 & -1 & 3 \\ 2 & -7 & 1 \end{vmatrix} \\ &= \hat i(-1 + 21) - \hat j(1 - 6) \\ &\quad + \hat k(-7 + 2) \\ &= 20\hat i + 5\hat j - 5\hat k \end{aligned} ∣a⃗×b⃗∣=400+25+25=450=152\begin{aligned} |\vec a\times\vec b| &= \sqrt{400 + 25 + 25} \\ &= \sqrt{450} = 15\sqrt2 \end{aligned}

∴\therefore the required area is 15215\sqrt2 sq. units.

Want the reason behind every step, the basics and the checks?

The one idea this problem is built on

The length of a vector product is base times height of the parallelogram on its two factors:

∣a⃗×b⃗∣=∣a⃗∣ (∣b⃗∣sin⁡θ)=area.|\vec a\times\vec b| = |\vec a|\,(|\vec b|\sin\theta) = \text{area}.

So compute a⃗×b⃗\vec a\times\vec b by the determinant and take its length.

Basics you need

1Area of a parallelogram

If a⃗\vec a and b⃗\vec b are adjacent sides of a parallelogram, its area is ∣a⃗×b⃗∣|\vec a\times\vec b| (Section 10.6.3, Observation 9). The book works the same pattern in Example 25.

2The determinant form of a⃗×b⃗\vec a\times\vec b

i^,j^,k^\hat i, \hat j, \hat k in the top row, then the components of a⃗\vec a and of b⃗\vec b; expand along the top row with signs +,−,++, -, + (Section 10.6.3). Basics: a determinant measures a signed area

3Magnitude from components

∣xi^+yj^+zk^∣=x2+y2+z2|x\hat i + y\hat j + z\hat k| = \sqrt{x^2 + y^2 + z^2} (Section 10.5.1). Basics: use Pythagoras twice

Solution

  1. The area is ∣a⃗×b⃗∣|\vec a\times\vec b|

    With a⃗\vec a as the base, the height of the parallelogram is ∣b⃗∣sin⁡θ|\vec b|\sin\theta, so

    area=∣a⃗∣∣b⃗∣sin⁡θ=∣a⃗×b⃗∣.\text{area} = |\vec a||\vec b|\sin\theta = |\vec a\times\vec b|.
    The height is the distance from the tip of b⃗\vec b to the line of a⃗\vec a, the side of a right triangle opposite the angle θ\theta with hypotenuse ∣b⃗∣|\vec b|. By Definition 3, ∣a⃗∣∣b⃗∣sin⁡θ|\vec a||\vec b|\sin\theta is exactly the length of a⃗×b⃗\vec a\times\vec b.
    Area of a parallelogram =∣a⃗×b⃗∣= |\vec a\times\vec b| (Section 10.6.3, Observation 9). Lesson: the cross product
  2. The vector product

    a⃗×b⃗=∣i^j^k^1−132−71∣=i^(−1+21)−j^(1−6)+k^(−7+2)=20i^+5j^−5k^.\begin{aligned} \vec a\times\vec b &= \begin{vmatrix} \hat i & \hat j & \hat k \\ 1 & -1 & 3 \\ 2 & -7 & 1 \end{vmatrix} \\ &= \hat i(-1 + 21) - \hat j(1 - 6) \\ &\quad + \hat k(-7 + 2) \\ &= 20\hat i + 5\hat j - 5\hat k. \end{aligned}

    Check: (20i^+5j^−5k^)⋅a⃗=20−5−15=0(20\hat i + 5\hat j - 5\hat k)\cdot\vec a = 20 - 5 - 15 = 0 and (20i^+5j^−5k^)⋅b⃗=40−35−5=0(20\hat i + 5\hat j - 5\hat k)\cdot\vec b = 40 - 35 - 5 = 0.

    The minors are (−1)(1)−(3)(−7)=−1+21=20(-1)(1) - (3)(-7) = -1 + 21 = 20, (1)(1)−(3)(2)=1−6=−5(1)(1) - (3)(2) = 1 - 6 = -5 and (1)(−7)−(−1)(2)=−7+2=−5(1)(-7) - (-1)(2) = -7 + 2 = -5; the j^\hat j term takes a minus sign, giving +5j^+5\hat j. Both scalar products are 0, as they must be for a vector perpendicular to both sides.
    Expansion along the top row, signs +,−,++, -, +. Basics: a determinant measures a signed area
  3. Its length

    ∣a⃗×b⃗∣=202+52+(−5)2=400+25+25=450.\begin{aligned} |\vec a\times\vec b| &= \sqrt{20^2 + 5^2 + (-5)^2} \\ &= \sqrt{400 + 25 + 25} = \sqrt{450}. \end{aligned}

    Since 450=225×2=152×2450 = 225 \times 2 = 15^2 \times 2, 450=152\sqrt{450} = 15\sqrt2. The area is 15215\sqrt2 sq. units.

    Squaring removes the signs. Taking out the largest square factor, 225, gives the simplest form, the one in the answer key.
    ∣r⃗∣=x2+y2+z2|\vec r| = \sqrt{x^2 + y^2 + z^2} (Section 10.5.1). Basics: use Pythagoras twice
  4. Check with the scalar product, and the picture

    ∣a⃗∣2=1+1+9=11|\vec a|^2 = 1 + 1 + 9 = 11, ∣b⃗∣2=4+49+1=54|\vec b|^2 = 4 + 49 + 1 = 54 and a⃗⋅b⃗=2+7+3=12\vec a\cdot\vec b = 2 + 7 + 3 = 12, so

    ∣a⃗×b⃗∣2=∣a⃗∣2∣b⃗∣2−(a⃗⋅b⃗)2=11×54−122=594−144=450.\begin{aligned} |\vec a\times\vec b|^2 &= |\vec a|^2|\vec b|^2 - (\vec a\cdot\vec b)^2 \\ &= 11 \times 54 - 12^2 \\ &= 594 - 144 = 450. \end{aligned}
    O b, length 3√6 a, length √11 height area = |a × b| = 15√2 ≈ 21.21 θ ≈ 60.50°
    The parallelogram on a⃗\vec a and b⃗\vec b drawn in its own plane, true to scale, with b⃗\vec b (length 363\sqrt6) along the base and a⃗\vec a (length 11\sqrt{11}) at about 60.50∘60.50^\circ to it. Base 363\sqrt6 times height 53\frac{5}{\sqrt3} is 152≈21.2115\sqrt2 \approx 21.21.
    This route uses only the scalar product, so it checks the determinant independently. In the picture the longer side b⃗\vec b is the base; the area does not depend on which side is the base, because ∣b⃗×a⃗∣=∣a⃗×b⃗∣|\vec b\times\vec a| = |\vec a\times\vec b|.
    ∣a⃗×b⃗∣2=∣a⃗∣2∣b⃗∣2−(a⃗⋅b⃗)2|\vec a\times\vec b|^2 = |\vec a|^2|\vec b|^2 - (\vec a\cdot\vec b)^2, from sin⁡2θ+cos⁡2θ=1\sin^2\theta + \cos^2\theta = 1 (Sections 10.6.1 and 10.6.3). Lesson: Examples 22–25
Result

The area of the parallelogram is ∣a⃗×b⃗∣=152|\vec a\times\vec b| = 15\sqrt2 sq. units.

(Textbook answer: 15215\sqrt2.)

Check it with numbers

450≈21.213203\sqrt{450} \approx 21.213203 and 152≈21.21320315\sqrt2 \approx 21.213203 (the same number).

∣a⃗∣=11≈3.316625|\vec a| = \sqrt{11} \approx 3.316625, ∣b⃗∣=54≈7.348469|\vec b| = \sqrt{54} \approx 7.348469, cos⁡θ=12594≈0.492366\cos\theta = \frac{12}{\sqrt{594}} \approx 0.492366, so θ≈60.50∘\theta \approx 60.50^\circ and sin⁡θ=450594≈0.870388\sin\theta = \frac{\sqrt{450}}{\sqrt{594}} \approx 0.870388.

The height on the base b⃗\vec b is 45054=53≈2.886751\frac{\sqrt{450}}{\sqrt{54}} = \frac{5}{\sqrt3} \approx 2.886751, and 54×53=518=152\sqrt{54} \times \frac{5}{\sqrt3} = 5\sqrt{18} = 15\sqrt2 exactly.

Common mistakes
  1. Halving the answer. The 12\frac12 belongs to a triangle; the parallelogram on a⃗\vec a and b⃗\vec b has the full area ∣a⃗×b⃗∣|\vec a\times\vec b|.
  2. Sign slips with the negative entries. The i^\hat i minor is (−1)(1)−(3)(−7)=−1+21(-1)(1) - (3)(-7) = -1 + 21; writing −1−21-1 - 21 gives −22-22 and the check (…)⋅a⃗=0(\ldots)\cdot\vec a = 0 then fails.
  3. Using ∣a⃗∣∣b⃗∣|\vec a||\vec b| as the area. That is the area only for a rectangle; here θ≈60.50∘\theta \approx 60.50^\circ, not 90∘90^\circ.
What to take away
  1. Area of a parallelogram with adjacent sides a⃗\vec a, b⃗\vec b is ∣a⃗×b⃗∣|\vec a\times\vec b|, with no 12\frac12.
  2. Dot the vector product with both sides as a check.
  3. Simplify the surd by its largest square factor: 450=152\sqrt{450} = 15\sqrt2.
